Coaching Clinics

Chess Coaching Clinics

Sydney Academy of Chess offers coaching clinics, which are usually run every school holidays. The groups are run by an experienced coach, or two coaches if the groups are large. There are three separate clinics, which are described below.

Beginners/Rookies Workshop
This workshop is suitable for children who have never played chess before, or who only know the rules of chess and want to become better players. Topics covered will depend on the precise level of the group but will be amongst the following: the names and movements of the chess pieces, the aim of a chess game including the meaning of check and checkmate, ways to escape check, checkmating patterns, basic opening principles of chess, castling, simple endgames, and basic tactical themes.

Intermediate/Advanced Workshop
This group is intended for children who have been playing for some time, and are quite familiar with the basics of chess. The group will learn to implement more advanced tactical combinations which involve visualisation and calculation, and deeper strategies to out-manoeuvre the opponent, depending on the exact level of the group.

Holiday Chess Camp
Each camp is run over several days in the school holidays, and is for children of all levels who can play chess already. There will be many chess lessons during each day on different topics, interspersed with a chess competition, in which each student will have an opportunity to play against everyone else throughout the day.
